Dulles, VA - December 12, 2007 -- AOL today announced the year's top searches in a variety of categories, based on the people, places and topics that received the largest volume of search queries on AOL Search (http://search.aol.com), on mobile devices (http://wap.aol.com), and the most searched for Viral Videos, Music Videos and Television Moments on Truveo.com (http://www.truveo.com), a one-stop destination where consumers can find millions of videos from across the Web.

"Search results provide a unique snapshot of what's on the minds of millions of people from around the world, over the course of a year," said John Kannapell, Senior Vice President, AOL Search http://search.aol.com/ . "This year's annual list of top searches from AOL offers an interesting take on what people found interesting in news, politics, entertainment and pop culture in 2007."

For the second straight year, weather was the most popular general term on AOL Search http://search.aol.com/, while WWE wrestler Chris Benoit, the Apple iPhone and Britney Spears appeared at the top of the News, Gadget and Celebrity search lists. American Idol showed no signs of slipping from the top of the most-searched TV shows list; and Hillary Clinton emerged as the front-runner on the Top Politicians list. The unique combination of online viral videos and editorial commentary from top Celebrity Blogs like TMZ created a breed of celebrities whose accidental online celebrity led to offline fame. Topping this year's inaugural most-searched for "Accidental Celebrity" list is socialite-turned-reality-TV-star, Kim Kardashian.

The most popular videos searched for on Truveo.com this year include a babbling beauty queen, a music video that taught the world a new dance, and a television blackout that left fans guessing. Miss Teen South Carolina's question and answer fumble ranked as the Top Viral Video, while the world clamored to learn how to "Crank Dat" (Soulja Boy), making it 2007's Top Music Video. The much anticipated finale of The Sopranos sent viewers searching the Web for answers, making it the Top Television Moment of 2007.

"There are some things that have to be seen to be believed," said Timothy Tuttle, CEO and CO-Founder of Truveo and Senior Vice President of AOL Video. "The explosion of video on the web combined with the ability to search for almost anything has given us a unique ability to view the public moments and performances that became some of the most popular, talked about or engaging topics throughout the year."

Other top searches (http://hot.aol.com/2007) on AOL Search during 2007 included:

Top News Stories: Chris Benoit
People looking for news on AOL were most interested in wrestler Chris Benoit's shocking death. It earned more searches than any other news item in 2007, including news on the weight-loss drug Phentermine (no. 2); the Pet Food Recall (no. 3) Global Warming (no. 4); and the Virginia Tech tragedy (no. 5).

Top TV Shows: Idol's not budging
Reality TV shows, "American Idol" (no. 1); "Dancing With the Stars" (no. 2); and "Deal or No Deal" (no. 3) snagged the top three positions for the second straight year, followed by "The View" (no.4); and "Hannah Montana" (no. 5).

Top Politicians: Hillary Clinton wins the race
Possibly foreshadowing the 2008 presidential primary, Hillary Clinton tops fellow Democrat Barack Obama (no. 2). Rounding out the top five are Fred Thompson (no. 3); Al Gore (no. 4) and John Edwards (no. 5).

Top Celebrities: Britney's downfall leads to a spike in her popularity online
America's obsession with Paris Hilton may be over, but its love affair with Britney Spears reached new heights in 2007. The infamous pop star rocketed from number six in 2006 to the top of the list this year. Next on the list were Martha Stewart (no. 2), Anna Nicole Smith (no. 3); Madonna (no. 4); and American Idol contestant Antonella Barba making a surprising debut at number five.

Top Accidental Celebrities: Keeping up with Kim Kardashian
Thanks in large part to the persistence and popularity of Celebrity Blogs, a crop of unlikely pseudo-celebrities emerged online in 2007. Former friend of Paris Hilton and all-around socialite Kim Kardashian, led the pack, while Shyamali Malakar (no. 2); Larry Birkhead (no. 3); Sanjaya Malakar (no. 4); and tattoo artist Kat Von D (no. 5) rounded out the top five.

Top Mobile Searches:
People used mobile devices to not only stay connected, but to also seek out information in 2007. Leading this year's mobile search list is Iraq, followed by MySpace (no. 2); iPhone (no.3); Games (no.4); and Mail (no. 5).

DMOZ just launched new blog! You can find it on http://blog.dmoz.org.

According to Bob Keating, Managing Editor of DMOZ, the blog will be used to communicate authentic messages about DMOZ, highlight its enhancements, allow editors to showcase their categories, recruit new editors and get comments from DMOZ users. Check out his full post.

Personally, I'm ecstatic with the launch of the new blog! To those outside of the DMOZ community, DMOZ can be a mystery, from getting sites listed to how it works. But now, you can learn more about DMOZ on the new blog :)

So big congrats to the DMOZ team and AOL staff for working on the blog, also to DMOZ editors who have provided their input. Make sure to visit the blog to see what's new with DMOZ!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Ball Go Far!

The Little Team that Could. That is how I will remember <st1:stockticker>AOL</st1:stockticker> Search kickball team from 2007. We named the team Ball Go Far! ... now the ball did not always go far when I was kicking it, but most of the time it did. This summer over 20 <st1:stockticker>AOL</st1:stockticker> Searchers came out to weekly kickball games and gave it their all. Now, we may not have always won and the weather may not have always been entirely favorable, but it was certainly a good time.

Ball Go Far! finished with an impressive record of 5-8 coming in second in our division. Thanks to Miriam's fearless leadership as team captain, we did nothing but improve during the season. There were a few ESPN moments in the outfield and some close calls as the season heated up, but all in all it was a success. We even came in second in our division! Now, I must say that is pretty impressive.

Congrats to Ball Go Far! on a fantastic season!

Today we're unveiling the new beta version of <st1:stockticker>AOL</st1:stockticker> Mobile Search. Now when you're away from your computer, the power of <st1:stockticker>AOL</st1:stockticker> Search can go with you.

You can access <st1:stockticker>AOL</st1:stockticker> Mobile Search on your mobile phone by going to wap.aol.com then select "1" for Search.

Customized Views
To start with, we've created two versions of the <st1:stockticker>AOL</st1:stockticker> Mobile Search service. The "basic" version works on almost all cell phones that come with an Internet browser. For Windows Mobile users, we've created a special "Enhanced" version.

There are two main differences between the versions. First, Windows Mobile powered cell phones typically have larger screens, so for each search we're able to display more items on each screen. The second main feature difference is that the enhanced version for Windows Mobile takes advantage of Pocket IE and displays relevant content under tabs. This tabbed format organizes content more efficiently and makes search easier to navigate.

Searching on a mobile device means searching when you're on-the-go, which means you're probably not interested in browsing or exploring you're looking for answers -- and you want the right ones.

Just like our desktop version, you can now enter your searches in one box, but you get back much more than a list of website links.

In future posts, I'll go into more detail about getting the best results out of each search, but for now, let's go over some main features of the new search experience.

Local Listings
In the new <st1:stockticker>AOL</st1:stockticker> Mobile Search, you can search for local listings. Each result deep links into a page created by <st1:stockticker>AOL</st1:stockticker> CityGuide which contains information about the venue like a picture or a description of the establishment. Maps and directions of how to get there are also available from MapQuest. Be sure to set your location in search so you can get the best results and accurate directions.

Weather
The weather information is easy to find in the new <st1:stockticker>AOL</st1:stockticker> Moble Search. Just type "weather" if you've already set a location or "weather, city, state."

Movies
Looking for a flick to see with your chick? You can get movies in your area easily too. A search brings results directly from <st1:stockticker>AOL</st1:stockticker> Moviefone.

Stock Quotes
These days you can't check the financial markets often enough. Most days stocks are down :-( Prices, Charts, and the news for each company are at your finger tips.

Images
He's got the home run record, but Barry Bonds doesn't stop making news. With <st1:stockticker>AOL</st1:stockticker> Mobile Search you can get pics of the world's home run king.

We've packed a lot into the beta release of <st1:stockticker>AOL</st1:stockticker> Mobile Search, I hope you'll take the time try it out on wap.aol.com, then select "1" for Search.

We're especially interested in your comments and questions, so don't hold back.

Check out some of these places to use AOL Search:

1. AOL Search home page ... duh!
Just type in search.aol.com in your address bar:

2. AOL Toolbar
If you don't have one already, you can download the AOL Toolbar at toolbar.aol.com. On the toolbar, you'll see a search box on the left:

3. AOL.com home page
Just today, AOL.com launched its new, sleek look. You can even customize the color scheme for your AOL.com page, from the default tan to pink. Go to aol.com and you'll find a search box at the top of the page:

4. AOL software
If you use AOL software to check your e-mails or to browse the Internet, you'll find several places to use AOL Search. Here's a screen shot of the latest software, AOL9.0VR, where you see search box at the top of the screen and also on the Welcome page when you first log in:

5. Various AOL sites and channels
Many of the AOL sites have search functionalities at the top of the page. Here's AOL News for an example. Just click on the "Web" tab, and type your keyword in the search box:

Another example is AOL Mail, where you can find a search box on the top left of AOL Mail. You can use it to search your e-mails or to search the Web. the latter is the one that AOL Search powers. Just type in your keyword in the search box and click on the "Web" button:

So there you go ... just some more places where you can find AOL Search. Next time you're using an AOL service or reading an article on an AOL channel, give the AOL Search box on that site a try!
Technorati Profile

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Did You Pre-Order 'Harry Potter' Book 7 Yet?

If you're a true Potterhead, you probably pre-ordered 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' the day it was available for pre-order. I remember checking out an online bookstore where this book made the number top selling book that week, just from people who pre-ordered the book.

I myself pre-ordered the book the day it was available for pre-order, of course! After I went to see 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix' this past weekend, I re-read 'Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince' (that's book 6 to you non-Potterheads) to get myself ready for the final book. I know, I'm such a nerd!

If you still haven't pre-ordered the book yet, not to worry. I believe you still have time -- at least that's what a lot of online bookstores have claimed. If you're into bargain shopping and you want to compare prices on the book, just search for 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' on AOL Search. You'll see our One Click feature where you see a list of online retail stores for price comparison:

Or, maybe you prefer to stand in line at the bookstore on the d-day? I know it's summer and the weather is probably going to be nice, but I prefer to shop conveniently from my own home. When I pre-ordered book 6, I received it the day it came out. So on July 21st, I'll be staying home and reading the final book. I just hope Harry doesn't die!

Check out more searches on 'Harry Potter' on our Hot Searches blog -- you won't believe what #6 is. It can't all be about hot dogs, barbecue and fireworks!

Danny Sullivan wrote a nice timeline on the history of AOL Search on Search Engine Land, all the way back to 1995. I've been in the search industry for a while, but I haven't been with AOL Search that long, so it's interesting to see how the product has evolved. Okay, there's no formal award ceremony or anything, but this is great! Big kudos to our Product team :-)

McAfee used its SiteAdvisor's automated Web site ratings to assess Google, Yahoo!, MSN, AOL, and Ask on the safety of these five search engines' search results. Results were released just last week as a follow up study to their December 2006 release. In both studies, AOL returns the safest search results.

So in case you didn't know, AOL Search defaults its search results to SafeSearch. You can check to see if your SafeSearch is on or not by looking at the status below the search box. You can go to your Preferences page or just do a search on AOL Search to get there:

Happy Searching!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Searching for May Sweeps

I don't know about you, but I've been glued to my TV every night. On the official AOL Search blog (searchblog.aol.com), I'll still talk about product announcements, what's new with AOL Search and search tips to help you find what you're looking for. On the Hot Searches blog (hotsearches.aol.com), we'll highlight the hottest searches on AOL and give you our take on popular culture, breaking news and more. And once in a while you'll get my random thoughts ;) But I'll try to stay focus on talk about search since after all, this is a blog for a search engine!

So update your bookmark and RSS feeds. And I'd love to hear your thoughts, questions and comments about AOL Search and Hot Searches!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

New! Big congrats to the AOL India team! And of course, there's a search box that you can use. It's at the top right hand side of the page. So you won't miss it, I've put a big red circle around it ;)

With the search box on AOL.in, you can search for both text and images. You can also select to search the entire Web or India sites only. I did a search for Aishwarya Rai (yeah, I know a little bit about Bollywood!) and in addition to the Web results, I also got Bollywood News in One Click, which recommends AOL channels related to your searches.
If you haven't checked it out yet, give it a try today!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
